Robert Clayton Snow Ancestry

Documented ancestry of our family’s American lineage begins with “Joseph West (1755-1848) who volunteered in the Revolutionary War fight for freedom in his new country under command of General Richardson and went on the Snowy Camp Tour. In 1776, he enlisted under Col. Sumter faced severe engagements with Indians in Tennessee. After returning to So. Carolina faced severe skirmishes with Tories. Afterwards, volunteered under Col. Richardson and fought with him at the Battle of Stono. About 1780 or 1781 he joined Marion in skirmishes. In later part 1781-1782 he served as a Stock Driver for Greens Army. He received part pay under Sumter, received no pay for other services.” (Taken from original Application for Pension Benefits per Act of Congress passed 1832.)

Joseph W. West married Susanah Benbow and of this marriage was born Benjamin Powell West (born between 1775-1784 and died before Sept. 1820) in Sumter, So. Carolina. This son, Benjamin Powell West married Cherry Davis in Sumter, So. Carolina, and of this marriage was born Joseph W. West (the second) born abt. 1815 and died before July 1857 and named for his grandfather, the original Joseph West.

Joseph W. West (the second) married Mary A Brunson (1817-1870) March 7, 1837 in So. Carolina. From this marriage was born a daughter, Mary Susanah West (1840-1925). Mary Susanah West married John Robert Snow (1828-1909) who was born in Georgia. They were married on February 11, 1858 in Coffee County, Alabama and moved on to Bedias, Texas. This was a second marriage for Mary Susanah West and of this marriage was born Manning Brunson Snow (1876-1930).

Manning Brunson Snow married Lydia Myrtle Clayton (1886-1927) on October 7, 1901, in Madison Co., Texas. Of this marriage was born the following:

  2. Ishmael Brunson mrd Faye Dinkins (Ishmael B. Snow, WWII veteran)
  3. Robert Clayton mrd Annie Laura Dinkins
  4. Estelle mrd Orville Evans
  5. Mary mrd Homer McMillon
  6. Wylie (never married)
  7. Wilson mrd Betty Boudat (Wilson B. Snow, U.S. Army WWII POW Bataan 1942-1945)
  8. Billy D. mrd Margaret (Bill D. Snow, U.S. Army WWII, served in Europe and Korea)
  9. Manning Brunson mrd Ruth (1st mrg), mrd Kathy (2nd mrg) (Manning B. Snow, U.S. Army WWII, served in Europe)

Manning Brunson and Lydia Myrtle Snow are buried behind the First Baptist Church in Magnolia, Texas. All their children with the exception of two, Estelle and Billy D., are buried at Springer Macedonia Cemetery.
